Meet Robert Guerrero. He’s just your average working father with a beautiful wife and two young children. Did we mention he’s also a champion boxer? As “The Ghost,” Robert has dominated in the ring, earning three world champion titles. His wife, Casey, is also engaged in an important fight—the fight for her life in the face of a leukemia diagnosis.
Robert is one of our candidates for 2010 Man of the Year, and will be raising vital funds for blood cancer research and patient services through his participation in the campaign. His hope? To give blood cancers the big T-K-O. Read on for Robert’s personal testimonial.
My name is Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero and I’m a professional prize fighter. I’ve been blessed during my profession in becoming a three-time world champion. Throughout my career as an amateur competing in the Olympic trials and as a professional, I’ve been in the ring with some of the best fighters in the world, but nothing can compare to the fight my wife, Casey, is going through.
Casey, whom I’ve been with since I was fourteen years old, was diagnosed with leukemia in November of 2007. She had to undergo a bone marrow transplant this past January and, miraculously, a match was found in Europe. I credit my faith in Jesus Christ, who has granted me strength and understanding during this trying time.
For those of you who have loved ones who are dealing with blood cancer, my thoughts and prayers go out to you. Taking my wife to her chemo treatments and watching what she has to endure has given me a new perspective on life. It’s been difficult juggling my boxing career while being by my wife’s side, not to mention taking care of the many responsibilities that come with being a father. We have two young children, Savannah (age 5) and Robert Jr. (3), and Casey and I want to give them the best possible life.
There is no doubt in my mind that Casey is the real fighter in this family. My love for her is eternal, so I’m going to do my best to help raise money in an attempt to become the 2010 Man of the Year. Together, let’s make a difference by knocking out leukemia and all blood cancers.
